How will the course benefit me?
This course will be delivered over two weeks in two separate sessions of 2.5 hours each. It is suitable for those who have some experience in art but would like to try using watercolours or further practice the medium. Using the subject of still life such as vases, cups and bottles, objects found around the home, students can practice getting proportions right. You will learn to use watercolour to add light and dark and later colour. Watercolour is a fluid medium and you will learn techniques to gain control over the flow of the watery paint. This is a challenge, but there are many benefits as it is a transparent medium, and completely different from acrylics or oils. You will learn to save the light areas in your painting with the white paper, which is good discipline. You will use a bit of planning in your work, but the paint has the ability to flow by itself, creating interesting colour effects, so you learn to embrace the unexpected in your work. If you normally use acrylics or oils, it can add a whole new area of experimentation. If you have only made drawings so far, using watercolours can provide an exciting next step into colour.

What will I learn?
With your still life set up, you will learn to sketch lightly to form the basis of the painting. Starting light with watercolours is the key and sketching with the brush is the starting point. Next there are washes of colour to cover larger areas – this can be done as a background wash or underpainting, or this may be done to create background around an object. You will learn to work onto dry or wet paper. Once you have the basic layout, your still life can be built up with stronger shapes in darker tones, or glazes. This is where you can start to create space. More experienced learners may use more colour in the earlier stages with the wet-into-wet process. But all can finish off their paintings with smaller brushes for more detail. The key with watercolours is not to “over-do” it – a light touch is important. And this can be a very beneficial aspect you can take back to your other work, if you use other painting media.

Career Opportunities
Students can move on to other art classes in the Institute, either of a more general nature to gain experience in drawing or painting a range of subject matter, or they can specialise in watercolours by attending further courses at the Institute. Your tutor will guide you.

Entry Requirements
Some experience in drawing is recommended. You might have been drawing and painting different subjects in a general art class in the past but you would like to learn to use watercolour. You need to be willing to experiment, to make mistakes and start again, often! But it is fun!

Additional Material Cost
Please bring a sketchbook of ordinary cartridge paper and some soft pencils as we will be doing some sketches before starting in paint. Learners will need to bring their own watercolour paints – watercolour pans (in a box) or tubes – often sold in a pack. There will be some watercolour paper available for you to use. Experienced learners may like to try buying loose paper which they can then cut to size.

Health & Safety
It is important to have good eyesight, good concentration and reasonable manual dexterity for participation in the class. It is also important to be able to understand verbal instructions and to be comfortable using the art equipment, drawing boards, etc.

How will the course be delivered?
The tutor will perform practical demonstrations and give verbal instructions and feedback at various stages of the project. Learners will receive one-to-one support as well as opportunities for group discussion. Continuous guidance and help will be available to every learner.??
