How will the course benefit me?
This course will help you to develop your creativity and pottery skills in a structured and lively?environment, coached by a professional and practising potter. Learn a wide variety of techniques including throwing, hand-building, decoration and glazing. Ideal for beginners to?pottery?or for those with some experience.

What will I learn?
Try your hand at making beautiful, creative and practical objects out of clay. During this course you will gain a basic understanding of hand-building techniques; coiling, pinching and slabbing, and learn how to throw a bowl on the potter’s wheel. You will also be able to explore various decorative techniques including; sgraffitto (scratched), slip decoration, resist and glaze decoration. Experienced students will be able to?develop and expand on existing skills.

Career Opportunities
Students can expand on their existing skills by enrolling on a further pottery course. Further courses and masterclasses at the Institute will be recommended based on your needs and ability.

Entry Requirements
This is a mixed ability class which welcomes beginners. Good hand-to-eye coordination is essential.?

Additional Material Cost
You will need an apron, old clothes or an overall. You will be advised of any?equipment you need to purchase in the first lesson. Materials and tools are provided, but please note there is a charge made for clay (to be paid before the first firing (£2 per pound of clay).

Health & Safety
Please be aware that this course involves the generation of dust which, whilst carefully controlled?and is not usually hazardous, may affect some individuals. Face masks are available upon request.?You will need to follow the tutor’s instructions on health & safety procedures given at the beginning of this course.

How will the course be delivered?
Students will be taught in a relaxed atmosphere. There will be demonstrations by the throughout the course and you will receive one-to-one guidance and support from the tutor.
