How will the course benefit me?
This course is for anyone who has an interest in textiles and sewing crafts and would like to learn how to produce a decorative cushion for their home furnishings.

What will I learn?
You will learn: how to measure and calculate the size of the cushion cover, how to plan your design and develop design idea, a variety of techniques to decorate and embellish the cushion cover (including hand stitching or machine stitching), the different ways to fasten the cushion cover opening (with a zip or button), how to make a covered button and insert a zip. You will be expected to carry out some work at home.

Further courses at the Institute in textile subjects and clothesmaking will be recommended based on your needs and ability.

Entry Requirements
Some knowledge of using a sewing machine and hand sewing is required and an enthusiasm for textile crafts and sewing.

Additional Material Cost
The tutor will explain the materials that will be used in the first lesson. Sewing machines and some basic equipment are provided. However, learners will be expected to purchase their own sewing kit, consisting of a measuring tape, pins, scissors, sewing needles, threads and marking chalk. There will be white cotton fabric provided, but learners can bring their own fabric and matching thread and embellishments if they wish. You will need to purchase a cushion pad measuring 42cm x42cm square. Please bring a note book and pen to take notes on your first lesson.

Health & Safety
You will need to follow the tutor’s instructions on health & safety procedures and learn how to use a sewing machine, iron and sewing equipment safely.

How will the course be delivered?
Demonstration, practical work, one-to-one support and opportunities for group discussions will be provided.
