How will the course benefit me?
This course would benefit anyone who has a keen interest in fashion and clothesmaking. It will benefit learners who would like to further their clothesmaking skills. This will give you the basis to continue on to further courses in fashion/clothesmaking.

What will I learn?
You will learn how to use a sewing machine and how to thread and wind the bobbin correctly, take accurate body measurements and compare pattern to select size, produce a simple garment using a commercial pattern - this will be advised by the tutor at the beginning of the course (N.B. this course does not include pattern making), select an appropriate fabric for the chosen pattern, interpret and read pattern instructions, cut out and lay up the pattern correctly, sew a garment whilst using a range of sewing techniques, incorporating health and safety good practice.

Entry Requirements
This is course is suitable for those who may have completed our ‘Clothesmaking Beginners’ course or have some experience of Clothesmaking and knowledge of using the sewing machine. You must be able to take notes. Reasonably good hand-eye coordination is also necessary. Please note: this course is not run as a workshop, and learners will be expected to follow the course programme and tutor set projects. Learners must attend regularly to ensure progress.

Additional Material Cost
Your tutor will advise in the first lesson of what equipment to purchase. Sewing machines and some basic equipment is provided. However, learners will be expected to purchase their own sewing kit, consisting of a measuring tape, pins, scissors, sewing needles, threads and marking chalk. Whatever garment you make, you will need to buy a pattern, fabric, trimmings, threads and all the equipment needed to complete it, this will vary depending on the fabric and pattern purchased.

Health & Safety
You will need to follow the tutor’s instructions on health & safety procedures and learn
how to use a sewing machine, iron and sewing equipment safely.

How will the course be delivered?
Demonstration, practical work, one-to-one support, group work and discussions will take place.
