More information about this Course

How will the course benefit me?
During this course you will learn basic and some advanced jewellery making techniques. The metals used for this will range from silver, copper and brass. This will help you to develop your skills in designing and creating wearable jewellery. Classes are structured and set in a lively environment.

What will I learn?
You will be set work according to your skills and knowledge. These projects will help you to increase your skills in designing and making jewellery. During this course you will be taught basic and more advanced skills of jewellery making. These skills include use of tools, how to use workshop equipment, skills needed for designing and crafting jewellery. You will have the opportunity to put these skills into practise by making pieces, first from copper, or brass then sterling silver. You will learn: to understand and follow health and safety guidelines, how to solder, pierce metals, make links and findings, surface decorations with hammers or a rolling mill and finishing techniques.

Career Opportunities
On completion of the course, you may progress onto a course designed for those with more advanced skills and experience. Redbridge Institute offers a range of jewellery making courses available on several different days and times, as well as master classes in specific techniques. Before the end of the course, your tutor will provide information on suggested next steps for you.

Entry Requirements
This course is designed for beginners as well as learners with prior knowledge. If you have previous experience and knowledge in silversmithing and jewellery making but feel you need a refresher, then you will benefit from this course. Projects are set according to skill level and learners will work at their own pace. For health & safety reasons, it is essential that you are able to stand and have good eyesight. Jewellery making is very physical and requires excellent manual dexterity and concentration.

Additional Material Cost
A basic tools list will be given out on the first session. Our workshop is highly-equipped with most tools needed for your projects. However, you may want to invest in personal tools further into the course. We have a small number of consumables and tools for sale in class, but can advise you on suppliers. You will be required to purchase ALL materials, eg. silver, copper, brass and consumable tools (saw blades, solder, etc.).

Health & Safety
Some of the materials used such as silver and copper may, rarely, cause allergic reactions. If in doubt, please contact your medical practitioner. You will need to follow the tutor’s instructions on health and safety procedures given at the first session. NOTE: You should NOT wear open shoes. Wear an old shirt/apron.

How will the course be delivered?
The tutor will perform practical demonstrations and give verbal instructions and feedback at various stages of the project. Learners will receive one-to-one support and participate in group discussions. Continuous guidance and help will be available to every learner. Handouts may be given demonstrating some design ideas with instructions.
