COVID-19 In order to ensure the safety of staff and learners the way we can provide courses has changed. See details below. There may be further changes if Government and Public Health advice changes.

How will the course benefit me?
If you need to improve your English further for your work; to get employment or to access another vocational course, then this 14-week course (March till July) could be your next step. You will improve your English skills and confidence and work towards gaining a City and Guilds Functional Skills qualification and being able to apply for other courses as well as improving your digital skills at the same time.

What will I learn?
You will learn how to improve the writing, reading and communication skills needed for everyday life and employment, including improving your IT skills. You will be able to improve your grammar, spelling and punctuation as well as the form and style of your writing. You will also improve your IT skills, including learning how to use Google Education Suite; send emails and how to use on line meeting platforms and observe etiquette: how to switch your camera off and on, mute yourself, use chat facility and interact on-line with your peers

Career Opportunities
At the end of the course your tutor will advise you on your next step. This will depend on your attendance (minimum 80%) and your progress. This could include progression to Entry 3 or Level 1 ESOL or English courses or a vocational course.

Assessment / Exam
How will my learning be assessed? Throughout this course your tutor will assess your work and skills by regular homework, tests, tutorials and observation. You will have your own individual learning plan (ILP) that you will maintain with personal targets that you will be working towards. You will be working on the skills needed to pass Entry 3 Functional Skills. During the course you will be able to take a City and Guilds English Functional skills qualification at Entry 3 or Entry 2 depending on your progress and results of assessments. During the first 2 weeks your learning and level, as well as your attendance, punctuality and commitment to learning will be assessed to make sure this is the right course for you. If your assessment shows that you are at a different level, then your tutor will recommend the most suitable course for you to transfer to. If your attendance and punctuality is erratic then you may not be able to continue on the course.

Entry Requirements
• You will need access to the internet and a suitable device to access on-line learning, preferably a laptop. • To have been assessed and demonstrated that you have the potential to pass English Functional Skills at Entry 2 or Entry 3 • To agree to attend the whole course for 14 weeks ; have 90% attendance and spend at least 3 hours a week on self-study. • If progressing from another course to have: o shown the necessary commitment to learning by achieving at least 80% attendance o passed any tests or assessments (if appropriate) o very good punctuality o regularly completed homework.

Additional Material Cost
You will need a folder; A4 lined paper and a notebook. You may want to buy an English only dictionary. Your tutor will talk to you about this when you start the course

Health & Safety
You will be issued with a Redbridge Institute Google account which is to be used while you are on the course. You will also be expected to be familiar with staying safe while learning online. Under no circumstances should you use your personal email account to access our Google system. Depending on the course you are enrolled for you may need a private space while participating in the online part of the course. Your tutor will advise you. If we return to the classrooms, you will be issued with a photographic ID card and lanyard which must be worn at all times in our buildings. You will need your ID to get into the building.
