Covid 19 - In these challenging times, the safety of learners and staff is our highest priority. We have therefore introduced a range of measures to protect every member of the learning community. These include strict limits on class sizes to ensure social distancing can be maintained within classrooms. There are also additional procedures and limitations around the use of entrances and exits, corridors and other public areas.

How will the course benefit me?
This course provides a foundation in various media: pencil, charcoal, pastels, but particularly acrylics. Leaners who have attended our courses have progressed to degree courses, have acquired the skills and confidence to run small businesses, sell and exhibit their work or help with their current employment. The course enables learners to explore their own artistic ability and gain confidence in valuable practical skills, whether new or renewed.

What will I learn?
This 10-week course covers a broad range of drawing and painting techniques. During the course you will be introduced to basic colour theory and the techniques needed to use a wide range of materials, such as pencil, charcoal and chalk pastels. We may also use watercolour and pen and ink. You will be encouraged to experiment with techniques in order to become confident in completing various projects. Learners should see this course as an opportunity to experiment with the techniques taught to produce original and personal pieces of work. Learners will be expected to follow the course programme and attend regularly to ensure progression.

Career Opportunities
To any specialist art course within the Institute, e.g. watercolour painting, pottery or photography, as well as art courses in further education.

Assessment / Exam
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor who will assess you continually and informally. An Individual Learning Plan will help you monitor your progress and reach your targets.

Entry Requirements
Suitable for complete beginners through to intermediate level. Learners will be expected to follow the course programme and attend regularly and on time to ensure progression.

Additional Material Cost
Learners must provide their own art materials. An A3 sketch pad (cartridge paper), plus 2B or 3B pencils and a putty rubber will be needed for the first class. Learners will be advised on further materials during the course. Please note that the cost of materials for this course will be a minimum of £35. There may be a small charge for resource materials, and entrance to galleries and museums must be paid by the learner. Please wear old clothes as using various different media can be messy.

Health & Safety
You will need to follow the tutor’s instructions on health and safety procedures given at the first session.

How will the course be delivered?
Students will be taught in a relaxed atmosphere. Projects will be set by the tutor and may include still life set-ups, working from landscape or portrait/figure work with reference photos or looking at other artists’ work. There will be demonstrations by the tutor throughout the course. You will receive one-to-one guidance and support from the tutor. COVID 19 - PLEASE BE AWARE THAT, WHILST WE WILL MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO DELIVER THIS COURSE IN THE CLASSROOM AT WANTEAD HOUSE, SHOULD IT BE NECESSARY TO CLOSE THE BUILDING FOR REASONS BEYOND OUR CONTROL, WE WILL, WHEREVER POSSIBLE, CONTINUE TO DELIVER THE COURSE ONLINE.
