COVID-19 - We have introduced a range of measures to protect every member of the learning community at Gearies. These include strict limits on class sizes to ensure social distancing can be maintained within classrooms. There will also be additional procedures and limitations around the use of entrances and exits, corridors and other public areas.

How will the course benefit me?
This course provides a foundation in watercolour and is particularly suitable for those who are new to art or lack confidence in these skills. The course enables learners to explore their own artistic ability by practising a simple flower project, building on basic drawing skills as well as sketching with the brush.

What will I learn?
This 3-week course covers a range of watercolour techniques such as sketching with the brush, colour-mixing, background wash. You will be encouraged to experiment with techniques to become more confident with watercolours. You will learn how to relate different parts of the picture to each other for size (proportion). You will learn how to vary the brush-marks, fine with the tip of the brush, broad with the side, and how to create a soft, broken effect (dry-brush) as opposed to a smooth glaze in watercolour. You will also learn how to balance the different elements in the painting, such as colour, details and texture, for overall effect. This will all come together when you complete your first wild-flower painting.

Career Opportunities
To other short art courses and later, to longer art courses within the Institute, e.g. painting in acrylics or watercolours, pottery or photography.

Assessment / Exam
You will receive regular verbal feedback from your tutor, who will assess you continually and informally. An Individual Learning Plan will help you monitor your progress and reach your target.

Entry Requirements
The class is suitable for complete beginners. Learners will be expected to follow the course programme and attend regularly to ensure success.

Additional Material Cost
Learners must provide their own set of watercolours – Cotman is a good make for students - plus an HB or 2B pencil and 2 or 3 soft brushes, small and large (eg sizes 4 and 10). A pad of watercolour paper is needed, but can be purchased from the tutor at a small extra cost per sheet.

Health & Safety
Please follow the tutor's instructions on all health and safety procedures.

How will the course be delivered?
Students will be taught in a relaxed atmosphere. An introductory project will be set by the tutor and will include working from wild-flowers and sprigs supplied. Later you will be asked to bring your own flowers or you may look at the work of other artists. There will be demonstrations by the tutor throughout the course. You will receive one-to-one guidance and support from the tutor. Learners will be encouraged to practice at home between sessions. COVID 19 - PLEASE BE AWARE THAT, WHILST WE WILL MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO DELIVER THIS COURSE IN THE CLASSROOM AT GEARIES, SHOULD IT BE NECESSARY TO CLOSE THE BUILDING FOR REASONS BEYOND OUR CONTROL, WE WILL, WHEREVER POSSIBLE, CONTINUE TO DELIVER THE COURSE ONLINE.
