How will the course benefit me?
Please note this course may be delivered on line initially. To access it please see IT requirements below. You will develop your English skills, including producing complex pieces of writing, analysing a range of texts, taking part in discussions and making presentations. Achieving a GCSE English may help you to gain employment or entry into higher education or vocational courses. It is an essential pre-requisite for many professions and degree courses.

What will I learn?
The course covers three areas: reading, writing, and speaking and listening. You will study fiction and non-fiction texts. You will write in a variety of forms. There will be speaking and listening activities in class. The AQA syllabus will be followed. You will study: • Nineteenth and Twentieth century literature • Non-fiction and media texts and materials • Personal and imaginative writing • Writing to argue and persuade, writing to explain and describe • Communicating clearly in a variety of oral activities (using Standard English when appropriate) You will also improve your IT skills, including learning how to use Google Education Suite and how to use on line meeting platforms and observe etiquette: how to switch your camera off and on, mute yourself, use chat facility and interact on-line with your peers

Assessment / Exam
You will be assessed through informal and formal speaking and listening and written and timed exam practice (see course booklet for more detailed information) and you will sit two examinations at the end of the course. Successful candidates can achieve up to grade 9 at GCSE Higher level.

Entry Requirements
• You will need access to the internet and a suitable device to access on-line learning, preferably a laptop. • You will need to attend a short induction session on using on-line learning and Google for Education suite and be able to access on-line learning • To have been assessed and demonstrated that you have the potential to pass GCSE exams at grades 9-4. • To agree to attend the whole course and have 90% attendance. • To attend extra weekly English language support workshops if your tutors identify you will need them to be successful on your course. • To be prepared to take the final examinations. • Essential pre course reading is: I am Malala: The Girl who stood up for Education and was shot by the Taliban by Malala Yousafzai and Christina Lamb. ISBN 9780297870920. This must be read before starting the course in September. • You will also be expected to read at least 4 articles from a good quality newspaper each week throughout the course. • If progressing from another course you need to have: - shown the necessary commitment to learning by achieving at least 80% attendance - passed any tests or assessments (if appropriate) - have very good punctuality - regularly completed homework.

To fully participate in this class online you will need: • A computer/laptop/tablet with a fully updated browser (preferably Google Chrome). Your device will also need a microphone, and preferably a camera • A reliable internet connection To take part in classroom based leaning you will need…… • A GCSE course book and reader (your tutor will advise you on these) A folder, A4 lined paper and a notebook. You can use our Learner Resource Centre for free (printing costs apply).

Health & Safety
You will be issued with a photographic ID card and lanyard which must be worn at all times in our buildings. You will need your ID to get into the building. You will be expected to follow the social distancing arrangements in place for the safety of staff and learners see our guide to social distancing for further information. You will be issued with a Redbridge Institute Google account which is to be used while you are on the course. You will also be expected to be familiar with staying safe while learning online. Under no circumstances should you use your personal email to account to access our Google system. Depending on the course you are enrolled for you may need a private space while participating in the online part of the course. Your tutor will advise. Standard teaching room low level risks

How will the course be delivered?
You will need to attend an IT induction on using Google Education Suite at the Institute and have access to the internet and a suitable device, preferably a laptop to enable you to also access on-line learning confidently. At induction you will be issued with a Redbridge institute Google account. This course may be delivered on-line initially, using Google Education Suite, in line with current restrictions. Learning online will include video conferencing with your tutor and your peers, taking part in group discussions, watching videos, using other on-line resources e.g. Learn My Way and the tutor may make recordings of some parts of the sessions When restrictions are lifted, class sessions will consist of presentations, lectures, demonstrations and practical work. You will be expected to take part in a variety of paired, group, individual activities and discussions. You will be working from books, hand-outs, and presentations and have opportunities to access the internet and do practice tests. There will be reading, writing and discussion work. This course will continue to be offered using blended delivery. This will include some course time online and some in the classroom. Your tutor will advise when you start the course. Students will be expected to take an active part. Students should be aware that this is a very challenging and fast paced course. Homework is ESSENTIAL to complete this course. You should be prepared to do at least 4 hours of independent study each week. Essential revision sessions will be arranged during the year.
