What will I learn?
High level calculation and problem-solving skills, both with and without a calculator.
Maths topics covering the GCSE Higher syllabus (9-1)including complex data handling, algebra, complex shape and measure calculations; types and properties of number, ratio and proportion.
How to investigate complex mathematical information, and present your findings to others.
How to read and tackle complex written problems.

Entry Requirements
To have been assessed and demonstrated that you have the potential to pass GCSE exams.
To have passed L1 or L2 Functional Skills Maths exam.
To be very confident with standard maths calculations and principles (at least L2) as it will be assumed you know these and they will not be covered in the course.
Agree to attend the whole course and have 90% attendance.
To be prepared to take mock tests during the course and the final examinations.
Good reading, writing and speaking skills to at least English Level 1
If progressing from another course to have:
- shown the necessary commitment to learning by achieving at least 80% attendance.
- passed any tests or assessments (if appropriate).
- very good punctuality.
- regularly completed homework

Assessment / Exam
Throughout the course your tutor will assess your work and skills by regular homework, tests, tutorials and observation. You will have an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) that you will maintain with personal targets that you will be working towards.
During the first 5 weeks your learning and level, as well as your attendance, punctuality and commitment to learning will be assessed to make sure this is the right course for you. If your assessment shows that you are at a different level, then your tutor will recommend the most suitable course for you to transfer to. If your attendance and punctuality is erratic then you may not be able to continue on the course.
Your tutor will assess your class work and homework throughout the course and give you regular feedback. You will also do mock examinations throughout the course to track your progress. You will work towards the final exams, three in all. The exams contain a functional skills element (reading/reasoning) where you will need to read and analyse information and set out logical calculation steps to obtain an answer. You will be assessed in the three exams in June, at the end of the course. Successful candidates can achieve a GCSE qualification at grades 4 to 9: Maths GCSE (9 – 1) Higher Level Pearson Edexcel qualification
