How will the course benefit me?
This short course is suitable for second language speakers of English who are enrolled on a vocational class including Childcare, Teaching Assistant, Business, Interpreting or Counselling courses and need to improve their English language knowledge and skills, to enable them to support them on their vocational course. In addition to language development you will also work on your digital skills. Please note this course may be delivered online initially and some sessions may be recorded. What will I learn?
The class will mainly focus on improving reading and writing skills as well as grammar and vocabulary at a high-intermediate level. You will read, understand and discuss ideas presented in a range of texts, as well as produce writing, such as progress reports and job or course application letters. You will develop your sentence grammar including a range of compound and complex structures. Your tutor will discuss and agree with you any individual topics you wish to cover as part of your individual learning plan. You will also improve your IT skills, including learning how to use Google Education Suite and how to use online meeting platforms and observe online meeting etiquette: how to switch your camera off and on, mute yourself, use chat facility and interact online with your peers

Entry Requirements
• You will need access to the internet and a suitable device to access online learning, preferably a laptop.
• You will need to attend a short induction session on using online learning and Google for Education Suite
• You will need to be enrolled on a vocational class.
• You will need to have a high - intermediate level of English language knowledge and skills.
• You will need to be able to work independently completing course work by given deadlines.
• You will need to agree to attend the whole course and have 90% attendance.
• You will enjoy participating in class discussion and activities and commit to personal study of at least 2 hrs a week.
• If progressing from another course you will have:
o shown the necessary commitment to learning by achieving at least 80% attendance
o passed any tests or assessments (if appropriate)
o very good punctuality
o regularly completed homework.

Assessment / Exam
Throughout the course your tutor will assess your work and skills by regular homework, tests, tutorials and observation. You will have an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) that you will maintain with personal targets that you will be working towards. During the first 2 weeks, your learning and level, as well as your attendance, punctuality and commitment to learning will be assessed to make sure this is the right course for you. If your assessment shows that you are at a different level, then your tutor will recommend the most suitable course for you to transfer to. If your attendance and punctuality is erratic then you may not be able to continue on the course.

Career Opportunities
At the end of the course your tutor will advise you on your next step. This may be to ESOL or English course or a vocational course.
